![]() ![]() The researchers will present their work at this year’s Conference on Lasers and Electro Optics (CLEO: 2012) in San Jose, Calif., taking place May 6-11. The device, which was engineered with off-the-shelf parts, includes a laser capable of generating pulses of light a mere 200 quadrillionths of a second in duration. These bursts are powerful, but are so fleeting that they spare surrounding tissue. The laser is coupled with a mini-microscope that provides the precise control necessary for highly delicate surgery. Using an imaging technique known as “two-photon fluorescence,” this specialized microscope relies on infrared light that penetrates up to one millimeter into living tissue, which allows surgeons to target individual cells or even smaller parts such as cell nuclei. The entire endoscope probe package, which is thinner than a pencil and less than an inch long (9.6 millimeters in circumference and 23 millimeters long), can fit into large endoscopes, such as those used for colonoscopies. The new system is five times smaller than the team’s first prototype and boosts the imaging resolution by 20 percent, says Ben-Yakar. The optics consist of three parts: commercial lenses a specialized fiber to deliver the ultrashort laser pulses from the laser to the microscope and a 750-micrometer MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) scanning mirror. To hold the optical components in alignment, the team designed a miniaturized case fabricated using 3-D printing, in which solid objects are created from a digital file by laying down successive layers of material. Tabletop femtosecond lasers are already in use for eye surgery, but Ben-Yakar sees many more applications inside the body. These include repairing the vocal cords or removing small tumors in the spinal cord or other tissues. Ben-Yakar’s group is currently collaborating on two projects: treating scarred vocal folds with a probe tailored for the larynx, and nanosurgery on brain neurons and synapses and cellular structures such as organelles. ![]() “We are developing the next-generation clinical tools for microsurgery,” says Ben-Yakar. ![]() His throat started to burn and he vomited white foam. I became more suspicious about toxins in skincare products when my son became ill during the application of one of those Halloween face painting kits. ![]() Imagine my embarrassment when my 6 year old blurted out at a birthday party, “Hey Mom, there’s high fructose corn syrup in these fruit snacks!”īy the time my second and third sons came along, I began to learn about the chemicals not just in foods, but in cleaning and personal care products. The more I learned, the more I distrusted the well-known brands that were a major part of our diet. I had a lot to learn about food additives, dyes, artificial flavors and sweeteners, preservatives and chemicals with unpronounceable names. After my first son was born I began to realize I was only scratching the surface. Like most parents, I wanted to provide my children with a healthy foundation and protect them from chemicals that did not belong in their bodies. I have always believed in the benefit of leading a healthy lifestyle, but becoming a mom inspired me to turn it up a notch. #Choosy chick trialsamplesįree samples come with every order! Yay! ![]() There are many sawing tricks with significant differences in their basic effect. ![]() A complete prop from Thayer would cost $175 or they would sell plans for $5. By November 1921 the Thayer magic company in America was advertising a version for sale. The success of Selbit and then Goldin led to more and more magicians trying to imitate them with copies or improved versions of sawing illusions. Goldin later developed a sawing illusion that dispensed with boxes and used a large buzzsaw. This process was then reversed, and the assistant released unharmed. Goldin sawed through the middle of the box, inserting metal sheets to cover the cut ends, and then pushed the two halves a little way apart. Goldin's assistant lay in a box from which her feet, head and hands protruded. Later in 1921, Horace Goldin, a magician working in the United States, presented the first version which might look familiar to modern audiences. Ī later iteration of Horace Goldin's version of the trick, with a buzzsaw blade In the public performance the role of victim was taken by principal assistant Betty Barker. According to Jim Steinmeyer the woman who participated in the December 1920 demonstration was Jan Glenrose, who was Selbit's main assistant at that time and who was also the partner of magician Fred Culpitt. The question of who was the first woman to be sawn in half has received much less publicity than the question of which magician first presented the illusion. The impression that she could not evade the saw was created by the confined space in the box and by ropes tied to her hands, feet, and neck, which were held throughout the illusion by spectators from the audience. Selbit's assistant was locked inside a closed wooden crate and could not be seen. His trick, which he billed as "Sawing Through A Woman", was significantly different from what a modern audience would expect. George's Hall, London, to try to persuade one of them to book his new act for public shows. In fact Selbit had previously performed the illusion in December 1920 before a select audience of promoters and theatrical agents at the St. ![]() Selbit on 17 January 1921 at the Finsbury Park Empire theatre in London. It is generally accepted that the first public performance of a sawing illusion was achieved by British magician P. Wherever the idea originated, until the 1920s it remained just an idea for an effect, rather than a practical application of a method. It was suggested during a court case in 1922 that the trick can be traced back to ancient Egypt however, this claim has not been substantiated. Modern magic inventor and historian Jim Steinmeyer has concluded that there was probably no real Torrini and the story was merely a way for Robert-Houdin to play with ideas. In his Memoirs, written in 1858, Robert-Houdin described a sawing illusion performed by a magician named Torrini. However, it is more likely that the story is a fiction which has its roots in the writings of the famous French magician Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin. There remains a debate about the origin of sawing illusions, with some sources saying a magician named Torrini may have performed the first version in front of Pope Pius VII in 1809. |
